Blockchain Arbitration Breakthrough – Journal of Law, Ethics & Technology Paper by Muahmmad Ayaan Shehryar & Areej Anwar

Demystifying Legal Jargon

We are pleased to share that our associate Muhammad Ayaan Shehryar and previous intern Areej Anwar have published a groundbreaking 20,000-word paper on blockchain arbitration. This paper has been published in Volume 2, Issue 3 of 2025, in the Journal of Law, Ethics & Technology—a peer-reviewed journal, associated with the Chinese University of Political Science and Law.

The title of the article is “The integration of blockchain technology with arbitration mechanisms: its efficacy and implementation in international arbitration” and can be accessed at on this link.

This article explains the role of blockchain technology in revolutionizing international arbitration. Firstly, it demonstrates that decentralized systems like the Kleros mechanism can resolve disputes with remarkable efficiency, taking an average of just 13.23 days from filing to enforced award. Secondly, the research validates that blockchain arbitration complies with rigorous procedural fairness standards, ensuring expertise, impartiality, and transparency through crypto-economic incentives and anonymized, crowdsourced jurors. Thirdly, while the automatic enforcement of awards via smart contracts is a major advantage, the study identifies significant challenges in reconciling these digital awards with the traditional enforcement framework of the New York Convention, particularly regarding jurisdictional seat and public policy. Finally, to bridge this gap, practical hybrid models are proposed that combine blockchain efficiency with institutional oversight, paving the way for a more democratized, efficient, and equitable future for cross-border dispute resolution.
